Combining mp3s

Postby ianmitchell » Mon Sep 06, 2004 8:00 pm

I've been converting a few of my CDs to mp3s to listen to on my mp3 player (legal copies of my own CDs in compliance with Canadian copyright law, of course). However, I've run into a minor snag with some of my dics. Certain prog epics are spread over multiple tracks, but my mp3 player then inserts a pause between each track. Is there any easy way to combine multiple tracks into one mp3 (preferably without buying expensive software)?

I love Canadian copyright law. ;)

If you are looking for something that will join actual MP3 files, I can't really help you there. But if you don't mind having to re-rip the tracks in question, read on.

I use iTunes to rip my CDs onto my computer. It has an option that lets you join tracks together when you are ripping them. I've done this with songs like "A Pleasant Shade of Gray", "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", and tons more, and it works perfectly.

Oh yeah, cost. It's free. :D

Happy ripping!

On the "Advanced" menu, you should see the option "Join CD tracks". It's only available when you are ripping a CD.

So it will still keep the individual tracks seperate, but eliminate the pause in between? If that's what I'm getting, neato :P

No, I think it will combine them into one single track. Not sure though.

This is correct.

I find it to be a very useful feature because I like to listen to songs on shuffle sometimes, and I find it irritating to hear, say, "War Inside My Head" by itself. Having "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" pop up on random is pretty awesome. :)

I have even done that for some albums like Misplaced Childhood, Brave, and Scenes from a Memory. MC and SFAM exist on my computer as 2 files each, and Brave is 4 files, just because of where the logical breaks between sections fall.
